Welcome
In 1964 two endocrinologists from Wales (Picton Thomas and Hamid El Shaboury) began to hold regular endocrine meetings with presentation of interesting cases alternately in Cardiff, Bristol and Oxford. Following the expansion of the endocrine service in Cardiff (with the arrival of Reg Hall and Maurice Scanlon) the meetings at Bristol were dropped but continued regularly in Cardiff.
In 1974 David Owen and Hamid El Shaboury began to meet regularly to discuss the diabetic service in Cardiff and Wales in general. Symposiums on diabetes were subsequently held annually in Cardiff and diabetologists from Wales attended regularly.
The Endocrine and Diabetes meetings were then combined and the Welsh Endocrine and Diabetes Society was established with Maurice Scanlon as its first chairman. The first meeting was held in 1984 at the Celtic Manor.
